If there’s one piece of advice I’d give as a midlife coach for women, it would be: “Don’t wait to do more of the things that you love.” Maybe you’re putting off travel, creative pursuits, career changes or other dreams until “someday,” or retirement. Many women in their 40s, 50s and 60s do this, not realizing that they may have fewer healthy, active years than they realize. You see, the average health expectancy for women in Canada is 67.7 years, compared to life expectancy of 84 years, according to Statistics Canada. (American numbers are similar.)
It’s sobering, but also a reminder to make the most of each day and year that we have. So if there’s something that you’ve been longing to experience, do, learn or create, now might be the perfect time to start. (Even if that means scheduling it in or letting go of something less fulfilling.) Now is the time to do the fun and adventurous things that require more energy and mobility. (The stats above are averages, of course. There are lots of healthy, active people in their 90s—but why wait?)
My clients and I know that the sooner we start to do more of the things that we enjoy and let go of the outdated beliefs or fears that hold us back, the more we can get out of life. If you’ve dreamed of hiking the Bruce Trail, learning to sculpt, doing the Camino with friends or loved ones, or writing a book, why not start working toward that now rather than at retirement?
