When refining your job search on platforms like LinkedIn, it’s natural to focus on job titles and career progression. After all, titles can signal growth, status and achievement. Plus, we’ve often been socialized to aim for more and more success, even if it leads to burnout. Or to stay in the same, safe field rather than consider a more fulfilling career pivot.
So here’s a powerful question that I encourage my coaching clients to ask themselves:
“How do I want my work—and my life—to feel?”
This question has helped some of my coaching clients transition to more creative work, exciting new fields or new business ventures.
Here’s Why Job Titles Aren’t Everything
A bigger title may seem like the next logical step in your career, but it doesn’t always translate to a better quality of life. Many of the professional women whom I coach find themselves burned out, overwhelmed, or disconnected after pursuing roles that look good on paper but don’t align with their values or current needs. (That’s why I left a two-decade career to become a certified life coach.)
So instead of focusing only on titles, consider factors such as:
- Level of responsibility and stress
- Flexibility and remote work options
- Opportunity to work three or four days a week
- Work-life balance
- HR support and learning opportunities
- Time for personal priorities, family, or creativity
If finances permit, a role with less responsibility but more freedom may lead to greater happiness and fulfillment than a high-pressure leadership position. I speak from experience when I say that coaching helps you do the mindset work to prioritize your well being over status and appearances.
Align Your Career With Your Life Right Now
Your priorities evolve over time. What mattered five years ago may not reflect what you need today.
This is where coaching can make a meaningful difference. A certified life coach like me can empower you to:
- Clarify what truly matters to you now;
- Identify patterns or expectations that no longer serve you;
- Build confidence in making aligned career decisions; and
- Avoid falling back into “should” thinking.
Rather than giving you answers, coaching helps you access your own clarity and inner knowing. I also offer different tools and exercise to help expand your thinking about what’s possible and to overcome fear if it arises.
A Smarter Way To Job Search
My clients know that the most effective job search strategy blends practical filters like title and salary with emotional alignment. When you prioritize how you want to feel in your daily life, you’re more likely to find work that’s sustainable—and truly satisfying.
