It’s not too late to make a change in your life. In fact, “too late” is just a thought that you can learn to deconstruct.
You’re not doomed to stay in a rut forever, adds Pema Chodron in her book, Welcoming The Unwelcome: Wholehearted Living In A Brokenhearted World. Elsewhere in the book she writes, “In this very brief time that we have on earth, we have to ask ourselves how we’re going to spend our time. Will we keep increasing and strengthening our neurotic habits in our vain quest for some kind of lasting comfort and pleasure? Or will we make it a practice to step out into the learning zone?”
Pema is a Tibetan Buddhist who teaches at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. I’m a huge fan of Pema’s books and have enjoyed Awakening Loving Kindness, Start Where You Are and When Things Fall Apart thus far.
I support change and growth as a certified life coach, but I live it as an individual too. I made a major career pivot and stopped drinking after 50, for example. On my 50ForwardClub Instagram feed, I’ve also featured many vibrant 50+ women who have started lifting weights, started new businesses or moved to another country.
Change doesn’t have to be dramatic, however. Scheduling time for journaling, taking a cooking class with a friend or walking an extra five minutes are small ways to make a positive difference in your life. Is there something different that you could do for 15 minutes today that would bring you some peace and joy, for example? (Carve that time out of something less satisfying, like social media scrolling.)
